Yet another polygamy book, I know I read a lot of them, this one was much different. Written By Irene Spencer took place from 1950’s to early 90’s. She was the 2nd of 10 wives to Verlan LeBaron. They bounced around Mexico, California and Nicaragua. She had 14 children during her 28 year marriage. One difference in this book from many of the other polygamy books I have read, the LeBaron family struggled to survive. They lived with no electricity, no running water, dirt floors, outhouses, no heat and barely any food. The wives and children were spread out in many different houses, where as most polygamous families live in one house all together. Irene’s story is very touching and very emotional. Through the story Irene has a lot of inner turmoil. She struggles daily in her religion and marriage. She struggles with a large family and barely any food, clothing, money, or education, and of course her raging jealousy. I really enjoyed hearing another side of polygamy. The book is long but very well written! I recommend this read and give it 2 thumbs up! I look forward to reading her other book as well.
