Today I use a writing prompt from over on Bloggy Moms, Part of the Blog Dare.
Today the topic on blog dare is “My absolute Worst Mothering Moment (so far). This is easy for me!
It was the summer of 2006. Butch had just turned 4. He was a typical boy. It was all about bikes, swimming, dirt, mud and bugs.
I was fortunate enough to have a great job with an amazing work schedule. I worked weekends, 12 hour days and was paid for a full 40 week. I had Monday-Thursday off. We spent the majority of our days outside or at the lake. We live in lakes country so there are plenty to choose from! when we were bored we would stop by the local dollar store and I would let the kids pick out some fun stuff to buy. It was usually junk and it usually broke by bedtime, but it was fun for them. One of the things they had picked out was a bug collecting kit. There was 3 different little kids you could pick up. They each picked one of each. Different colors of course. They had a bug net, a bug collection box to store them in with netted screen to keep the icky bugs inside. They had tweezers, plastic spoons, a small cup, a magnify glass etc. etc. They were very excited and spent a couple days on the hunt. They caught ants, worms, assorted creepy bugs, you know, your usual yard creatures. They even found some toads during the evening, but boring old me wouldn’t let them keep the toads. I made them let them go with the excise that their screened housing from the dollar store was not secure nor roomy enough for the little hoppers. They really wanted to catch a butterfly or caterpillar.

One evening we were outside cleaning up the toys and bikes because supper would be ready pretty soon. As we were sitting on the steps, Butch started jumping up and down excitedly hollering to MeMe that he found a caterpillar, hurry..run..get the tools. We scored this time!! I glanced over and saw the fat little bugger curled up and quite annoyed that this gigantic 4 year old was shaking the earth with his bouncing, and poking him with a twig yelling at the top of his lungs. After realizing he was gonna dissect and kill the poor thing before they managed to get him in the netted housing I told him hurry up, he’s gonna get away, pick him up, set him on the steps, then we’ll look at him and put him in the cage. Sounds like a plan right? I mean, this was nit an unreasonable idea, right? WRONG! Fearless little Butch bent down, picked it up and SCREAMED bloody murder and the tears were pouring immediately. Oh God, really, it’s just a damn caterpillar. I was a little annoyed and my head hurt like hell from all the yelling and crying. Butch shoved his finger in my face to look at. Then I realized what was going on. Fat, curled up bugger was actually a fat, curled up buzzer! My poor little guy had bent down to pick up what was thought to be a caterpillar and was stunned to realize it was a bumble bee! My little guy was stung by a bee! Poor thing! Instantly I felt horrible, I WAS THE ONE THAT TOLD HIM TO PICK IT UP! OMG I am such a horrible Mom! Here is this little guy looking up at me with these giant eyes, full of tears, blood shot and looking at me with resentment. It breaks my heart thinking about it now. I wish I could turn back time and re-do that whole event, but unfortunately I can’t and I am tortured with the memory.
I am sure Butch doesn’t even remember the whole thing and I sure as hell don’t want to remind him of it. There you go, my moment of weak mothering, a look into my extremely guilty moment, something I wish I could change, As a result of what I said, my son was hurt and that my friends is my absolute worst mothering moment, so far!
Awww, like you said he probably doesn’t remember! But I know it can still be heart breaking!
Everyone has these moments, and they always suck. At least he doesn’t remember it now.

Awe, I’m sorry. It stinks when you accidentally hurt your little one. I knocked my son over into the street with the car door once and he needed stitches in his head. I was so upset at the hospital that they didn’t feel the need to report me to social services. He survived me and is now 21.
